Anoint the Long Wick

A blessing need not arrive all at once. Some are grown the way the moon is grown, a little more light given over each night until the dark is nearly full of it.

This working reaches toward slow abundance: the quiet, compounding grace that settles on a house tended with attention. You are not begging a sudden turn of fortune but coaxing the steady swelling of enough, warmth, welcome, and a wick that never quite gutters. It is a keeping-spell for the season of increase.

The Working

  1. On the first night the moon shows its returning edge, choose a tall candle and dress it with oil in long upward strokes, base toward wick, drawing the blessing up into the flame to come.
  2. Roll the oiled candle through crushed basil and a little dried chamomile, so a fine green skin of plenty clings to it from foot to crown.
  3. Stand it in a shallow bowl and ring its base with a thin unbroken circle of salt; set a small green stone at the candle’s foot, just outside the ring.
  4. Light it, let it burn only a finger’s width, and pinch the flame out with wetted thumb rather than blowing, speaking the blessing as the smoke rises.
  5. Each waxing night burn a little longer than the night before and nudge the stone a hair’s breadth nearer the wax, so both the light and the good draw closer together.
  6. On the full moon let the candle burn down to the stone and go out of its own accord, then gather the blessed salt from the ring into your palm.
  7. Scatter the salt across the threshold and the windowsills of the house, and keep the stone in a warm dark drawer until the moon comes round to grow again.

The Incantation

Small the flame and slow the night,
fill the house as the moon fills white.
Wick grown longer, stone drawn near,
gather the good and keep it here.
Salt at the sill and warmth at the door,
enough tonight, and a little more.

What is grown this way settles deep and stays; when the salt has weathered from the sills, the blessing has long since gone into the walls.
