There is an hour when the house holds its breath over a sleeping child, and the candle answers.
This working reaches toward the fragile new-come thing that cannot yet ward itself, gathering warmth and kindly fortune about it. To bless the small is to promise the years ahead a gentler weather, and to name yourself, quietly, its keeper.
The Working
- On the first night the moon shows fuller than the last, set a single gold or honey-coloured candle where its light will fall toward the cradle but never near it.
- Warm a little oil between your palms and draw it slow up the candle from base to wick, speaking the child’s name into the wax three times.
- Press a few dried grains or a pinch of chamomile against the dressed wax so they cling there like small blessings.
- Light the wick and let the first breath of flame settle before you speak.
- Say the incantation low, once for each corner of the cradle, turning gently as you go.
- Let the candle burn a hand’s width down, then pinch it out with wet fingers and keep the stub to relight on nights the child sleeps ill.
The Incantation
Wheatlight, warm the small and new,
gold upon the cradle-rail;
what the dark would take from you
I set my keeping-vow to fail.
Sleep beneath a kindly star,
grow beneath a patient moon,
blessed the road, however far,
blessed the late and blessed the soon.
Wrap the stub in clean linen and keep it near. The blessing holds as long as the wax does.
