As the light goes amber and the day loosens its hold, the old herbs of luck give their gold most freely to warm water. Steep them at dusk and the bath becomes a brew you wear on your skin.
This is not a washing-away but a taking-in — you sink into fortune steeped like tea and rise wearing its color. Bay for triumph, marigold for the sun’s own favor, and a few drops of oil to seal the blessing to your skin. Dusk, the day’s gentle threshold, is when such gifts are given most freely.
The Working
- As evening comes on, warm a pot of water and steep in it a handful of bay leaves and marigold petals until the water runs gold.
- Draw a bath and pour the strained brew into it, setting three bay leaves aside.
- Add three drops of oil and swirl the water sunwise with your open hand.
- Sink in to the shoulders and rest there while the light fails, breathing the steam and letting the color settle on you.
- Before you rise, press the three saved bay leaves to your brow, your heart, and your open palm, naming a luck for each.
- Step out without rinsing and let the air dry you, so the blessing stays.
The Incantation
Bay and marigold, gold in the water,
lend me your favor, sun’s own daughter.
Not to wash off but to take within,
fortune steeped warm on my waiting skin.
Brow for the thought and heart for the deed,
palm for the giving of all that I need.
I rise from the gold wearing gold on me still —
