The new moon gives no light. To sit its darkness willingly is to tell fear you have already met the worst of it.
This vigil is a slow conquest of dread by presence alone. You do not banish the dark; you keep company with it until dawn, and in the keeping you learn that the empty hour holds nothing you cannot outlast.
The Working
- On the night of the new moon, cast a ring of salt wide enough to sit within, and set one candle before you.
- Place a bell at your right hand, a bowl of water at your left, and light a thread of incense between them.
- Light the candle and name aloud the fear you have come to outsit.
- Each time dread rises in you, ring the bell once, clear and unhurried, and let its sound fall into silence.
- Whenever the flame gutters, wet your fingertip in the water and touch it to your brow to stay awake and present.
- Keep the vigil until the candle is spent or the first grey light comes, whichever finds you first.
- At the end, break the salt ring with your own foot and step out changed.
The Incantation
Dark of the moon, I do not flee,
I sit the night you set for me.
Bell for the fear and bell for the bone,
I keep this hour, and keep it alone.
Salt at the border, flame at the core,
I have met the dark and I want no more.
What frightened me stands at the door,
and I unlatch it, unafraid, once more.
When the ring is broken, the fear stays inside it; you walk out carrying only what you kept.
