When the grey comes to the sill is a threshold release ritual spell for letting a heavy night go before the day begins. Wait at the threshold for the hour when black turns grey and the world has not yet chosen its colors. This is an advanced working of intent and release that uses the turning of the light itself as the current that carries weight over the sill, so that what crosses out at dawn does not ask to come back in.

What You Will Need
- A small hand bell with a clear voice
- A single candle, black or white, in a safe holder
- A coil or stick of incense such as sage, cypress, or lavender
- Clean salt for the threshold line
- A small vessel of fresh water
- An outer step or sill where the candle can burn down safely
The Best Time to Cast
Cast at dawn on a Saturday during the waning moon. Dawn is the seam of the day, neither night nor morning, and a burden shown that doubled threshold is easiest to send on its way. Saturn’s day lends the authority to close a matter, and the waning moon draws the weight down with it as it thins toward dark.
The Working
- Before first light, sweep a clean line of salt across the inside of your threshold, from post to post.
- Set a lit candle and a coil of incense on the inner sill, take a small bell in your hand, and open the door to the dark.
- As you wait for the grey to come, name softly all that the night has left heavy in you.
- When the first grey light touches the sill, ring the bell three times and let the sound go out through the open door.
- Take up the candle and pass its flame once over the line of salt, then carry the light across the threshold and set it down outside, facing away from the house.
- Sweep the salt out over the sill with three strokes, following the burden into the growing light, then sprinkle clean water along the bare threshold to wash it after.
- Come back in, close the door softly, and let the candle burn itself out on the step.
The Incantation
Grey at the sill, and the night breaking open,
here is the door, and here the going-out.
Bell, ring it loose; salt, sweep it clear;
flame, light the road that leads away.
What the dark laid on me, I lay on the dawn;
go out, and do not turn at the step.
Variations & Substitutions
- No bell to hand: clap three times, or tap a glass with a spoon; the point is a clear sound released through the open door. If you keep chimes by the door, ring those instead.
- No outer step: set the candle on a heatproof plate on an inner windowsill facing the dawn and let it burn under watch. Never leave an open flame unattended.
- Salt and water on hand: bless ordinary table salt and tap water first if that is what you have, for intention consecrates them. Cypress may stand in for the incense if you want a single releasing scent throughout.
A Word on Intent
This is a spell of release, not of harm. The burden you name is your own, the weariness of a hard night, and it is sent into the growing light rather than aimed at any person. Keep the working turned toward what you carry, in keeping with the Wiccan Rede, an it harm none, do what ye will. Ask only to set the weight down, and let the dawn take it where it will.
