The full moon lays a silver road across every dark water and every dark field, and beneath it a sign drawn well will not be forgotten. Work where the moonlight falls unbroken upon your paper.
A sigil is a wish pressed down into a single shape until it needs no words to be understood. This one is a compass with every needle pointing home, traced in the ash of things burned and the oil of things kept, charged against a stone that draws, so that wherever the lost one turns, one direction always pulls the strongest.
The Working
- On the night of the full moon, burn a pinch of dried herbs to a fine grey ash and let it cool in a dish.
- With a fingertip dipped in oil, draw upon dark paper a circle crossed by a single line, the road, and mark one end with the first letter of home.
- Sprinkle the ash across the wet oil so the sign stands out in grey, then tip away all that does not cling.
- Lay a lodestone or a piece of magnetite at the marked end, and set a lit candle above the whole design.
- Let the moonlight and candlelight fall together on the sigil, and speak the incantation while the wax drips a single seal upon the paper.
- Fold the paper around the stone, oil-side inward, and carry it or hide it near the door.
- On each full moon after, unfold it beneath the light and speak the words again until the road is walked.
The Incantation
Moon-drawn road across the night,
teach this needle where to lean.
Ash of ending, oil of light,
stone that pulls the far unseen.
Every way the wanderer turns,
one true north shall pull them home.
Home, the fixed and burning north,
answer now the compass’ call.
Keep the folded sigil dark and close, and when the wanderer’s step sounds at the door, unfold it once more and let the candle take it all to smoke.
