The Best Time to Cast
Cast this on a waxing moon, ideally on a Tuesday — the day ruled by Mars, planet of courage and forward motion. A waxing moon swells a little fuller each night, and a working of courage wants exactly that motion: nerve that grows rather than wanes. Begin a few nights after the new moon and let the spell run to the full, so that as the light thickens, so does your resolve. Casting at dusk, as the moon climbs, lets you carry the intent into sleep.
The Working
- Choose a length of strong thread the colour of dried blood or deep earth, and lay it across a scatter of salt to cleanse it of old fear.
- Under the waxing moon, hold one end and speak the first word of your vow, a single word, plain and true.
- Tie a knot upon that word, pulling it as tight as your fingers allow, until the thread bites.
- Speak and tie again, and again, until you have set seven knots and spoken seven words that together make your promise.
- Test the cord with a firm pull; if any knot gives, cut it away and set it fresh, for a slack vow is no vow at all.
- Wind the finished cord about your wrist or loop it through your belt, where your hand can reach it without thought.
- Each night until the moon is full, draw the cord taut once and repeat your seven words beneath your breath.

Variations & Substitutions
- No red thread? Any strong cord will serve; mark a plain thread with a rub of red ochre or a stroke of ginger to carry the Mars colour into it.
- Swap the salt for a brief pass through thyme or yarrow smoke when you want the herb of valour, rather than mineral salt, to do the cleansing.
- Fewer knots: if seven words feel forced, set three — one for the fear, one for the deed, one for the outcome you choose. The count matters less than the taut-pulled truth of each.
