The Best Time to Cast
Cast on a waning moon, on the nights when all things are meant to lessen and unbind. Wisdom workings often reach for the waxing moon to gather fresh insight, but this is a spell of untangling rather than gathering — you are loosing a confusion, not summoning one, and the shrinking moon lends its pull to everything that comes undone. A Wednesday, the day of Mercury and clear thought, sharpens the effect. Choose an evening when the house is still and you will not be interrupted before the last knot falls.
The Working
- On a waning night, when all things are meant to lessen and unbind, take a length of plain, undyed thread the span of your two arms.
- Ring your working-place with a thin line of salt, to keep the confusion from wandering.
- Speak your tangled question into the thread, then tie it full of knots — one for each snag and doubt — until it is a small hard mess in your hand.
- Set it down and ring a bell once, clear, over the knotted thread.
- Then, slowly, loose the knots one by one, and with each one freed speak aloud one plain thing you know for certain about the matter.
- When the thread hangs straight and smooth, ring the bell a last time and speak the incantation.
- Wind the freed thread loosely and keep it until the question has fully answered itself.
The Incantation
Knot by knot the trouble tied,

What was tangled, lie you straight,
what was clouded, come you clear.

The hands teach the head their patience; when the last knot falls, the answer is most often already lying open in your palm.
Variations & Substitutions
- No bell? A struck wine glass, a small chime, or a single clear clap of the hands will mark the opening and closing just as well — what matters is a clean sound that bounds the working.
- Colour the thread to the question. Where the working calls for plain undyed thread, you may choose purple for deeper wisdom or yellow for clear communication when the matter is specific. Keep it a single strand so the knots stay honest.
- Scent the salt. Crumble a little dried sage or rosemary into the salt ring to draw Mercury’s clarity nearer, or hold a piece of sodalite or lapis lazuli in your free hand as you loose each knot.
A Word on Intent
This is a spell worked entirely upon your own confusion, which makes it one of the cleanest under the Wiccan Rede — “an it harm none, do what ye will.” You are unbinding your own tangle, not reaching into anyone else’s mind nor steering another’s choice. Keep it that way: ask for clarity about your own part in a matter, never for power over the people caught up in it. Wisdom honestly sought, and kept to your own thread, harms none.
