What You Will Need
- A bell with a clear, sustained tone (a hand bell or a small ritual bell)
- A stick or cone of cleansing incense — sage or rosemary suit this rite
- A holder or censer to catch the ash safely

- Optional: a piece of black obsidian set on the threshold to anchor the boundary

The Best Time to Cast
Cast at dawn, in the “parting of the ways” when night gives way to day — a threshold in time that mirrors the threshold you are clearing, so that what leaves does so with the departing dark. Choose a Saturday during the waning moon: Saturn governs endings and firm boundaries, and the waning moon lends its power to all magic of decrease, carrying the unwanted influence out even as the light itself grows.
The Working
- Rise before first light and stand at the threshold you wish to clear, a bell in one hand.
- Kindle a stick of cleansing incense and let its smoke rise across the doorway until the air is grey and moving.
- Face the paling east and name aloud the thing that clings, quietly, only once.
- Ring the bell three times, letting each note fully die before the next is struck.
- Speak the incantation into the moving smoke as the first light breaks the sill.
- Ring the bell a final time and say the thing’s name backward, unmaking it in your mouth.
- Stand in silence until the last of the smoke has gone and the sun is wholly risen.

by bell and breath and rising light:
what has no leave to linger here,
I lift you from this door and night.
Named, I hold you; unnamed, I loose you;
go where the morning sends the dark.
Variations & Substitutions
- No bell? Use a small singing bowl, or two clear notes struck from a metal spoon against glass — the working needs a tone that rings and then dies, not a particular instrument.
- If sage is unavailable, or you prefer a gentler smoke, burn rosemary, or press a garlic clove with black pepper onto a charcoal disc; all three carry banishing virtue.
- To clear something that has no name — a mood, a heaviness, rather than a person or entity — describe it in a single plain phrase where the rite asks for a name, and speak that phrase backward at the unmaking.
A Word on Intent
Banishing, kept true to the Wiccan Rede — “an it harm none” — is defensive, never an attack. This spell removes an influence from your own threshold; it does not send harm toward any person. Name what you are releasing, not who: a fear, a stagnation, a presence that has overstayed its welcome. You are closing a door, not aiming a curse. Let the working be a clean ending, freely made and freely loosed.
