Old sailors bought the wind in knots, three tied into a single cord, and sold it to becalmed ships far from any harbor. Fortune, too, is a kind of wind, and it can be caught the same way.
This working reaches toward momentum, the gathering current that carries small gains into greater ones. Each turn of the braid binds a wish and holds it fast, so that nothing you summon can slip loose before its time. To wear the cord is to keep your hand on the tiller while the wind rises.
The Working
- Under a waxing moon, lay out three lengths of thread and a small green or golden crystal.
- Knot one end around the crystal so the stone anchors the cord like a keel.
- Begin to braid, and with each crossing of the strands breathe a single word of gain into the turn: coin, work, harvest, luck.
- When the braid is done, tie off the loose end and ring a bell once over the whole length to wake it.
- Coil the cord in your palm and speak the incantation, feeling the wind you have caught.
- Wear the coin-knot at wrist or throat, or hang it where a draft can stir it.
- Each new moon, ring the bell over it again to keep the wind fresh.
