White Wax, Grey Water is a cleansing candle spell for clearing the residue that gathers in a room and in a life. On the dark of the moon, when the sky keeps nothing, you set a single white candle to burn above a bowl of plain water: the flame reaches up, the water waits below, and between them the working lifts away the film left by hard words, old company, and days that ended wrong.

What You Will Need
- A clear glass or ceramic bowl
- A single white candle, with a holder or a way to anchor it above the water
- A pinch of salt — sea salt or plain table salt both serve
- Fresh, plain water to fill the bowl
- Optional: a sprig of sage, rosemary or hyssop, and a piece of selenite or black tourmaline set nearby
The Best Time to Cast
Cast this on the New Moon, the dark point where the old cycle has fully spent itself and the sky keeps nothing. A spell of clearing wants an emptying tide behind it: as the moon has thinned through its waning and gone, so the residue in your room is asked to thin and let go. Choose a Monday if you can — the Moon’s own day, ruled by the element of Water — when the water in the bowl and the water in you are most willing to carry things away. Work after dark, with the candle as your only light.
The Working
- On the new moon, fill a clear bowl with water and salt it lightly, then set it in the center of the room.
- Anchor a white candle so it stands just above the water’s surface, its flame a hand’s breadth clear.
- Darken the room until the candle is the only light, and let your eyes learn the edges of the shadow.
- Speak, plainly, the name of what has settled here — a grief, a guest long gone, a season that soured.
- Watch the flame lean and gutter as if pulling something up from the corners, and let it work without hurry.
- When the candle has burned a full finger down, snuff it with wet fingers and let the smoke cross the water.
- Carry the bowl outside and pour the grey water away, then wash the empty bowl in clean running water.

Variations & Substitutions
- No white candle? A pale blue or plain undyed candle carries the same clearing intent — colour matters less than a clean, honest wick.
- Deepen the cleansing with herbs: float a little dried sage or rosemary in the water, or lay a sprig of hyssop across the bowl’s rim, to sharpen what the flame draws up.
- If you cannot pour the grey water onto the earth, empty it down a drain under fast-running tap water instead; and a piece of black tourmaline left beside the bowl helps hold what is released until you carry it out.
A Word on Intent
Cleansing is gentle magic, but it is still magic, and the Wiccan Rede holds: an it harm none, do what ye will. This working clears your own room, your own threshold, your own settled grief — never another person against their will. Do not aim it at a housemate, a guest, or a neighbour as though they were the stain; name only what has truly settled on you and on the space that is yours to keep. Cleanse with consent, and the emptied air is honestly your own.
