This working is no simple sign but a mechanism drawn in ink, eight spokes for the eight winds of chance, a hub for the self that all luck must reach. You do not beg fortune here. You reach into its turning and set the pull toward your own name.
The Working
- As the clocks meet at midnight, draw on clean paper a wheel of eight spokes with a small circle at its hub.
- Along each spoke write a single letter drawn from a thing you desire, until the wheel bears a word turned to pure shape.
- Set a small crystal upon the hub to weight the center and hold the turning true.
- Trace one drop of oil sunwise around the rim, following the way you wish the wheel to spin.
- Pass the paper through slow incense smoke three times, quickening the sign until it seems to move.
- Speak the incantation with your eyes on the hub, and feel the pull come toward you.
- Fold the wheel toward yourself, never away, and keep it hidden where only you may find it.
The Incantation
Wheel of eight and turning wide,
let the tide of fortune ride.
Spoke by spoke and round it goes,
toward my hand the current flows.
Midnight hub and midnight seam,
turn my way, and turn to me.
So long as the folded wheel stays hidden and whole, it keeps its slow turning in the dark. Unfold it only when the luck has come, and let the wheel rest.
