Root-Mark at Midnight: A Prosperity Sigil Spell for Lasting Wealth

Root-Mark at Midnight is a prosperity sigil spell — a working that distils a wish for lasting wealth into a single drawn mark and charges it at the turning of the day. At the hinge of the night, when one day has died and the next has not yet drawn breath, a mark made on paper can be made to live. This is a sigil grown like a root: rather than chasing the coin that glitters and flees, it reaches toward a prosperity that deepens rather than dazzles, drawing your fortunes down into the dark and patient earth where nothing can reach them but you.

Correspondences for This Spell

  • Colours: green for money, gold for enduring wealth
  • Herbs: basil, cinnamon, and mint
  • Crystal: citrine (or green aventurine, or pyrite)
  • Day: Thursday
  • Planet: Jupiter
  • Element: Earth
  • Moon: the waxing moon, to grow abundance

For the reasoning behind each of these pairings, see the correspondences guide.

What You Will Need

  • A single candle — green for money-drawing, gold for lasting wealth, or plain white if that is what you have
  • A grounding stone to weight the working down: jet, obsidian, or smoky quartz
  • A prosperity crystal such as citrine, green aventurine, or pyrite, if you wish to draw wealth in as well as root it down
  • An anointing oil — a cinnamon or basil-infused prosperity oil, or plain olive oil
  • A sheet of paper and a pen
  • A growing plant, or a patch of bare earth in which to bury the finished sigil

The Best Time to Cast

Cast at midnight, the spell’s namesake hour — the hinge between one day and the next, when a mark can slip most easily from paper into the world. For added strength, work on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter and his open-handed abundance, and time the rite to the waxing moon, whose swelling light lends itself to anything you wish to grow. Midnight roots the wish; the waxing moon feeds it upward.

The Working

  1. At midnight, by the light of a single candle, still your breath until the flame no longer wavers.
  2. Write your intention for lasting wealth as one unbroken line of letters, then strike out every vowel and every repeated letter.
  3. From the letters that remain, draw a single bound figure whose lines all run downward, like roots seeking water.
  4. Anoint each of the sigil’s roots with a trace of oil, feeding it as you would feed a seedling.
  5. Set a stone of jet, obsidian, or smoky quartz upon the paper to weight the working into the ground of things.
  6. Pass the sigil three times through the candle-smoke and speak the incantation, charging the mark until it seems to pull at your hand.
  7. Bury the paper beneath a growing plant, or fold it small and keep it where you sleep, and never show it to another soul.

The Incantation

Midnight, the hinge, the turning of days,
take this mark and give it ways
to root and to reach in the dark below,
down where the deep and patient things grow.
Not the coin that glitters and flees,
but wealth like the oak with its hundred-year knees.
Grow me a fortune too deep to be drawn,
and hold it there fast till the breaking of dawn.

Variations & Substitutions

  • No dark grounding stone? Any small, heavy, earth-toned pebble will hold the sigil to the ground; smoky quartz is the gentlest to source.
  • Oil swap: a cinnamon- or basil-infused oil deepens the prosperity current, but a drop of plain olive oil feeds the sigil just as faithfully.
  • Nowhere to bury it? A pot of soil on the windowsill works as well as open ground, or fold the sigil small and keep it beneath where you sleep, as the working allows.

A Word on Intent

Prosperity magic sits easiest with the Wiccan Rede — “an it harm none, do what ye will.” Root your working in new abundance flowing toward you, not in wealth pulled from any named person’s hands. Ask the earth to grow you a fortune of your own, and let it harm none in the growing. Wealth taken from another has shallow roots; wealth you cultivate cannot be drawn up.

The root-mark works slowly and without spectacle; trust it as you would trust a seed you cannot see growing. What you plant at midnight, you harvest for years. Return this working to the Grimoire, or copy it into your own Book of Shadows to make it truly yours.
