The Sheaf-Binding

As the day gives itself over to dusk, the between-hour opens, and what you bind then holds fast. This is a small sheaf tied for the fattening of your fortunes.

The knot-witch knows that a hope left loose in the air drifts away, but a hope tied down takes root. This working gathers your wants into a single bound sheaf, so that abundance is knotted to your name and cannot slip its tether.

The Working

  1. Gather a small bundle of dried wheat, rosemary, and a sprig of something green, enough to hold in a closed fist.
  2. Anoint a length of golden or green thread with a drop of oil, drawing it through your fingers three times.
  3. As the sun touches the horizon, bind the bundle at its middle and tie the first knot, naming aloud one thing you wish to draw near.
  4. Tie six more knots along the thread, one for each remaining want, until seven knots hold the sheaf fast.
  5. Speak the incantation over the finished sheaf, then hang it above the place where money enters your house, a door, a desk, a till.

The Incantation

Dusk in the sky and grain in my hand,
I bind what I want to the turning land.
Knot by knot, I tie it near,
seven times over, and hold it here.
Thread that I fasten, do not slip;
keep my sheaf, and keep my grip.
Bound at the dusk, and mine to keep,
grow while I wake and grow while I sleep.

Leave the sheaf to hang until it has gathered a year of dust, then burn it and bind a fresh one in its place. What is knotted at the threshold of night ripens by the light of day.
