Draw the Road Through the Eye

The road is only long because we let it lie straight. Under a waning moon, a patient hand can coil it, loop by loop, until home sits close against the far one’s heel.

This working reaches toward the traveller whose distance has become a habit, gathering the miles as thread through a needle’s eye and drawing them small. As the moon sheds its light it teaches the road to shed its length; what unwinds in the sky winds tight in your hands.

The Working

  1. On a waning night, lay out a length of natural thread long enough to cross your palms nine times, and salt it lightly along its whole length.
  2. Work a few crushed homing-herbs between your fingers so their oil marks the thread as you handle it.
  3. Name one end of the thread for your own hearth and the far end for the wanderer, holding both names steady in mind.
  4. Draw the wanderer’s end slowly through the eye of a needle, whispering that the road now passes through this narrow gate.
  5. Tie the first knot close, then another, then another, until nine knots gather the length into a tight coil in your palm.
  6. Speak the verse as each knot is tied, and feel the far end drawn nearer the near.
  7. Keep the coiled thread beneath your pillow until they arrive, then loose one knot to let them cross the threshold.

The Incantation

Thread of salt and bruised green leaf,
gather the long road into brief.
Through the needle’s narrow eye,
the miles come small, the far draws nigh.
Knot by knot the distance ends,
nine times tighter the roadway bends.
Home to hand and hand to home,
no more, no more to roam.

Keep the knots close and the intent closer; the road obeys the patient more than the loud. When they stand at your door, undo the last knot and let the working rest.
