The Best Time to Cast
Cast at dusk — the threshold hour when day gives way to night and the eye turns naturally toward the road. Choose a Monday when you can, the Moon’s own day, and time the working to the waxing moon: as her light grows and swells, so grows the pull that draws your wanderer nearer with each passing evening. Dusk sets the mood, Monday lends the Moon’s homing tide, and the waxing phase turns the whole spell toward return.
The Working
- At dusk, choose the window whose glass faces the road the wanderer took, and wipe it clean of the day’s dust with your bare hand.
- Dress a plain candle with oil from crown to base, drawing your fingers always downward toward you as you name the one you would call.
- Roll the anointed wax through a little crushed homing-herb, angelica or yarrow or rosemary, so the flame will carry their green scent.
- Set the candle on the sill and ring a small bell once above it, waking the light to its errand.
- Light the wick as the last colour leaves the sky, and speak the vow below into the rising dark.
- Keep watch a while, then pinch the flame out, never blow it, and relight it at each dusk until they come.

Variations & Substitutions
- No open flame allowed? A flameless LED candle or a sealed lantern on the sill will serve — the vow lives in the faithful tending, not the fire itself. Ring the bell and speak the words just the same.
- Herb swaps: if rosemary is scarce, angelica or yarrow both carry a homing virtue; comfrey may be traded for a little mugwort to guard the traveller’s road.
- No bell? A wine glass rung once with a wet fingertip, or a single clear chime, will wake the light just as well.
A Word on Intent
The Wiccan Rede reminds us: “an it harm none, do what ye will.” A homecoming spell should call only those who are free to come and who would choose to — it must never bind, compel, or override another’s will. Cast this for the loved one who longs to find their way back but has lost the thread, or simply to keep your own heart’s door open and lit.
