The Mabon Gates Tarot Card Spread is an eleven-card reading for a goal standing at the edge of fulfillment. One side of the gate holds desire, delay, and unconscious resistance. The other holds what has already been built, who may benefit, and the key that opens the next passage.
Lay this spread at Mabon, when day and night face one another as equals and the harvest reveals what your labor has truly grown. It may also be used whenever a long endeavor reaches a threshold.
Every gate asks two questions: what will you carry, and what must you leave?
Preparing the Mabon Gates Tarot Spread
Place your deck on a dark cloth with one autumn leaf on the left and a seed, nut, or acorn on the right. The leaf represents the completed cycle. The seed represents the work still hidden ahead.
Write the goal as one sentence. Avoid asking whether it will “succeed.” Ask instead: “What opens the gate to this achievement?” Hold the deck between both hands, imagine a stone arch in late-evening light, and shuffle until your thoughts become quiet.
How to Lay Out the Eleven Cards
Arrange the cards according to the gate diagram below. Positions one through three reveal what stands before the threshold. Positions four through six show the work already completed. Cards seven through nine widen the reading beyond your private view. The final two cards reveal movement and access.
Meaning of Each Tarot Position
- What you want to achieve. The visible desire at the center of the question. Read this card carefully; it may show the deeper goal beneath the one you named.
- What keeps you from achieving it. The outer obstruction: circumstance, timing, missing resources, or another condition that must be faced.
- How you unconsciously interfere. A habit, fear, divided loyalty, or repeating choice through which you quietly close your own gate.
- What you have accomplished. The part of the harvest already gathered. Do not overlook it simply because the final threshold remains ahead.
- What helped you accomplish it. A person, discipline, quality, or fortunate current that strengthened the work.
- How you helped yourself. The inner resource you deliberately or instinctively brought to the path.
- How others perceive your idea. The face the goal presents to the surrounding world. This may differ sharply from your intention.
- Who will benefit from your idea. The people, community, or future self nourished if the gate opens.
- How you imagine your idea. Your private vision of the completed work, including any illusion or beauty coloring it.
- The next step. The immediate act required. This card should be translated into something you can begin before the next moon phase.
- The key to achievement. The principle that unlocks the gate. It may be an action, an ally, a surrender, or a different way of seeing the entire path.

Reading the Gate as a Whole
Begin with cards one, two, and three. Notice whether the obstacle outside you mirrors the interference within you. Then read four, five, and six as the gathered sheaves of the past season: result, assistance, and personal power.
Cards seven, eight, and nine form the lintel above the gate. They show how the endeavor exists in a larger field of perception and consequence. Compare cards ten and eleven last. The next step is the hand reaching forward; the key is what makes the lock answer.
Look for repeated suits, mirrored figures, and directions of gaze. If figures turn away from the key, something remains unacknowledged. If many cards face inward toward the center, the goal has gathered strong coherence.
Closing the Mabon Reading
Write one sentence for each of the final two cards. Place the written next step beneath the seed or acorn. Rest the key card on top of it overnight. In the morning, return the card to the deck and carry the seed until the first action is complete.
Close with these words:
Show me the key, reveal the deed.
What has been gathered, let wisdom keep;
What must awaken, call from the deep.
By balanced dark and balanced flame,
I cross the threshold knowing its name.”
