Mugwort and Moonlight

0 2 min read 3 hours ago

Beneath the dark of the new moon, when the sky keeps no lamp lit, the dreaming mind grows bold and goes wandering far. A small pillow of the right green things, tucked beneath the head, gives that wandering somewhere true to go.

This sachet is sewn to summon dreams that come vivid and clear and to hold the sleeper’s rest unbroken until the light returns. Mugwort opens the inner eye, salt keeps the threshold clean, and a pale stone anchors the dreamer so the night cannot bear them too far away. It is a quiet vow made to the moonless dark: show me true things, and let me wake still remembering.

The Working

  1. On the new moon gather mugwort and other dreaming herbs and let them dry until they whisper between your fingers.
  2. On a scrap of paper write the single word or wish you would have the night answer, and fold it small.
  3. Lay the folded paper, a pinch of salt, and a pale stone in the heart of a square of cloth, then heap the herbs over all.
  4. Draw the corners together and bind the sachet shut, speaking the incantation over the seam as you close it.
  5. Pass the little bundle three times through the shadow of an open window where the moonlight ought to be.
  6. Slip the sachet inside your pillowcase and lay your head upon it as you go down into sleep.

The Incantation

Mugwort green and moonless deep,
open the eye behind my sleep.
Salt to guard and stone to stay,
keep my dreaming safe till day.
Show me true and show me clear,
and let me wake with what I hear.

Renew the herbs at each new moon to keep the working awake, and it is released whenever the sachet is opened and its paper burned.
