The Gathering Mark is a cleansing sigil spell that draws every clinging burden into a single drawn symbol, then gives it whole to the flame. At the hinge of the day, when it is neither today nor tomorrow, the things that cling to us grow visible — and this working teaches you to name that weight, bind it into a small dark star, and burn it away over salt. It is an advanced rite for when ordinary smoke or water has not been enough to clear what lingers.
Correspondences for This Spell
- Colours: white with light blue — for purity and quiet, flowing clarity
- Herbs: sage, rosemary, hyssop — the classic cleansing trio, for smoke or for anointing
- Crystal: selenite, clear quartz, black tourmaline — to lift, amplify, and absorb what is released
- Day: Monday — the Moon’s day, ruling the tides of the psyche
- Planet: the Moon — governing intuition and the washing-clean of the emotional body
- Element: Water — the element of release and dissolution
- Moon phase: the waning moon — as the light thins in the sky, so does all you wish to clear away
For deeper detail on how these forces work together, see the correspondences guide.
What You Will Need
- A single white or pale-blue candle, to carry the cleansing flame
- A little anointing oil — plain olive, or an infusion of rosemary or hyssop — to seal the sigil
- A scrap of paper you are willing to burn
- A shallow dish of salt to catch and keep the ash
- A pen or fine brush for drawing the mark
The Best Time to Cast
Cast at midnight, the hinge between one day and the next, when nothing yet belongs to tomorrow and the weight clinging to you shows itself most plainly. A Monday deepens the work, lending the Moon’s authority over the inner tides, while a waning moon is best of all: as the light diminishes, it draws down whatever you wish to be rid of. Midnight is honest that way — it will not let you pretend the burden is not there.
The Working
- At midnight, sit alone by a single candle and set a shallow dish of salt within reach.
- On a scrap of paper, draw a sigil made of every line you can spare, binding into it all that has clung to you — name each thing under your breath as you draw its stroke.
- Anoint the four corners of the paper with a trace of oil, sealing what you have gathered inside the mark.
- Press the sigil to your brow, then to your heart, and feel the weight leave your skin and enter the paper.
- Speak the incantation, and touch a corner of the paper to the candleflame.
- Let it burn down over the dish of salt, so that no ash escapes the salt’s keeping.
- Before dawn, carry the salt and ash to a crossroads or a running ditch and scatter it behind you without looking back.
The Incantation
Come to the mark, all that clings,
sorrow and shadow and whispered things.
Into the lines I bind you fast,
out of my body, out of my past.
Fire to take you, salt to keep,
ash to scatter, mine to sleep.
I am unburdened, I am my own.
Variations & Substitutions
- Where an open flame is not allowed, draw and name the sigil, then tear it into small pieces over the salt and bury it at a crossroads instead of burning it — the naming and gathering do the real work; fire is only one door out.
- Swap the plain oil for a rosemary or hyssop infusion (steep the herb in warm olive oil, then strain) to fold the cleansing correspondences directly into the seal.
- Set a piece of black tourmaline or selenite beside the dish as you draw, letting the stone absorb or lift what leaves you; afterward, cleanse the stone under running water.
A Word on Intent
This is a spell worked only upon yourself and your own space — an it harm none, do what ye will. Cleansing binds and releases what clings to you; it is never turned toward another without their asking. Gather only your own burdens, scatter them where they trouble no one, and let the Rede keep your hands as clean as the salt keeps the ash.
