What You Will Need
- A wide bowl of clean water, set at the centre of your working

- A quiet room the full moon can reach, and a stream or wild place to visit at morning
The Best Time to Cast
Cast under the full moon, when the weight you carry can at last be plainly named. The full moon is also the turning of the lunar tide: from this night the moon begins to wane, and a rite of release rides that diminishing light. If you can, work on a Saturday, the day of Saturn — planet of endings and honest boundaries.
The Working
- Under the full moon, cast a circle with four candles at the quarters and a bowl of water at the centre.
- Choose a stone that fits the hollow of your hand, and hold it until it warms with your holding.
- Speak into the stone all that it has come to carry, until the telling is truly finished.
- Light a coil of incense and pass the stone three times through its smoke.
- Set a clear crystal beside the bowl to hold the clean intention while you work.
- Lower the stone into the water and take your hands away, breaking every point of contact at once.
- Snuff the candles one by one, and at morning carry the stone to a stream or a wild place and leave it where it lands.

Full and shining moon above,
witness what I lay to rest.
Long I carried, long I kept it,
pressed like iron to my chest.
Stone, I name you and release you;
you were mine, but are no more.
Water hold and moonlight witness —
I set down at last what I bore.
Variations & Substitutions
- No running water nearby? Bury the stone in earth at a wild place or a garden bed — soil receives and grounds as faithfully as any stream.
- In place of incense, use a bundle of dried sage or cypress, or a few drops of lavender in the bowl if smoke is difficult for you.
- If four candles are impractical, a single black or white pillar at the centre will hold the circle; snuff it last, after the stone has gone into the water.
A Word on Intent
The Wiccan Rede counsels, “an it harm none, do what ye will.” This is a rite of release; its force is turned inward, toward your own freedom, never against another. If the weight you set down is a bond with a person, release your hold on the burden, not a curse upon them; wish them well as the stone goes. What you lay in the water is your own carrying, and no one is harmed when you set it down.
