What You Will Need
- A clean bowl for gathering and mixing
- Nine blackthorns (sloe thorns), points intact

- A small glass jar or vessel with a cork, or a cloth to bind the mouth
- Cold water, and a spoon of hearth-ash to darken it
The Best Time to Cast
Cast this on the waning moon. As the moon shrinks toward dark, its pull is one of release, banishing, and turning away — exactly the current a ward needs when its whole purpose is to send ill will back from the door rather than to draw anything in. The full moon marks the peak of protective power in general practice, but a buried ward is waning-moon work: you are diminishing a threat, not summoning strength. Where you can, set the jar on a Saturday, the day of Saturn — planet of boundaries, walls, and old bargains kept — to lend the earth its steadying, defensive weight.
The Working
- On the waning moon, gather nine blackthorns, a fistful of hearth salt, and a pinch of bitter herbs into a clean bowl.
- Fill a small glass vessel with the thorns, their points turned outward toward every wall of the house.
- Pour the salt in over them, naming each corner of your home aloud as it falls.
- Add cold water darkened with a spoon of hearth-ash until the vessel is nearly brimming.
- Stopper it with a cork or a bound cloth, and press your thumb once to the seal.
- Bury it beneath the doorstone or the nearest threshold, and tamp the turned earth flat.
- Speak the incantation over the ground, then leave it undisturbed until the house forgets it is there.

Thorn to the door and salt to the seam,
bitter the water, black as a dream.
What wishes me harm, let it find only stone,
let it break on the buried and leave me alone.
Earth that I fed, now earth stand guard,
keep the ill wind out, keep the threshold barred.
Variations & Substitutions
- No blackthorn to hand? Hawthorn, holly, or bramble thorns carry the same warding bitterness, and where thorns are scarce a few bent iron nails will hold the boundary just as well.
- If you cannot bury the jar — you rent, or live above the ground floor — press it deep into a large pot of earth beside your entrance, or seat it at the very back of the cupboard nearest the front door instead.
- Swap the hearth-ash for a pinch of black tourmaline grit or a scraping of cold charcoal to darken the water and anchor the ward more firmly to the element of Earth.
A Word on Intent
The Wiccan Rede counsels, “an it harm none, do what ye will.” This is a defensive charm, and it should stay one. Its work is to bar a threshold and turn ill wishes back to stone — not to strike at any person by name. Hold your intent on the safety of your home and those within it: on the wall, not the wound. A ward that simply refuses harm entry keeps you well within the Rede; a jar built to injure someone does not. Let the thorns face outward, never toward a face.
