The Ironwick Dawn is a courage candle spell cast in the grey hour before sunrise, when a single flame can be taught to stand like iron. You anoint and dress one candle, kindle it at first light, and carry its cooled stub as a coal of resolve into the day ahead. It reaches toward the courage that does not shout but simply refuses to bend.

What You Will Need
- One red candle — a taper or small pillar you can safely let burn and then pinch out
- A little carrier oil, such as olive, or an anointing oil warmed between the palms
- Dried yarrow, for the warrior
- Dried thyme, for the steady hand
- An eastern windowsill that faces the sunrise
- A pocket to keep the cooled stub
- Optional: a carnelian or bloodstone set beside the candle
The Best Time to Cast
Cast at dawn, in the unwitnessed hour when night and day both stand as witnesses to the kindling. If you can, choose a Tuesday — the day ruled by Mars, planet of courage — during the waxing moon, when the light is building and so is your nerve. Dawn on a waxing Tuesday aligns the hour, the day, and the tide of the moon toward a single purpose: resolve that grows rather than fades.
The Working
- Rise while the sky is still the colour of ash and set an unlit candle on your eastern sill, the last dark of night at your back.
- Warm a little oil between your palms and draw it up the candle from base to tip, speaking your fear plainly into the grain of the wax.
- Press a pinch of dried yarrow for the warrior and thyme for the steady hand against the oiled wax until they cling.
- Strike the flame at the exact moment the first light touches the sill, so that night and day both witness the kindling.
- Watch without blinking until the flame stands straight and unwavering, and match your breath to it, slow and unhurried.
- When you are steady, pass your open hand once through the warmth above the fire and name aloud the thing you will face today.
- Let it burn a finger’s width, then pinch it dark and keep the stub in your pocket as a coal of the morning’s resolve.
The Incantation
Iron in the wick and iron in me,
grey hour, bear witness to what I will be.
Fear, I have named you; you hold no more sway.
Burn low and steady and light me the way.
By the first thin gold on the waking sill,
I stand where I stood, and I stand there still.
Variations & Substitutions
- No yarrow on hand? A pinch of dried ginger — also a Mars herb of courage — will dress the wax just as well for boldness.
- If an open flame on the sill is unsafe, stand the candle in a deep holder or a jar and set it on a heatproof plate; the working needs a witnessed flame, not a hazard.
- Swap the dressing crystal freely: carnelian for steady nerve, bloodstone for endurance, or red jasper for grounded strength.
A Word on Intent
The Wiccan Rede counsels, “an it harm none, do what ye will.” Courage magic is for your own spine, not for pushing past another’s “no.” Kindle this flame to face what is yours to face — a hard conversation, a threshold, a fear you have named — never to coerce or overpower someone else. The bravest working is the one that leaves everyone’s will, including your own, intact and freely chosen.
