At dusk the candle gives its final counsel, when the flame sinks low and the wick glows like a held breath. This is the hour a vow is entrusted to the ember rather than the fire.
A blessing spoken to open flame is loud and soon spent; a blessing pressed into a coal keeps its heat in secret. This working asks the small red heart of the candle to carry your promise forward, tending it through the long dark as banked embers tend a hearth till morning.
The Working
- As the sun lowers, anoint a stub of candle with a little oil, drawing your finger from base to wick so the blessing may climb.
- Roll the oiled wax through dried herbs of your keeping — rosemary for memory, thyme for constancy — until it wears a coat of green.
- Light the wick at the last blue moment of dusk and speak aloud the vow you mean to keep.
- Let the candle burn low and unwatched by others, until nothing remains but a single glowing coal in a bed of soft wax.
- Cup your hands about that warmth without touching it, and give the vow again in a whisper meant for the ember alone.
- Pinch the coal dark between wet fingers and gather the cooled remnant into a scrap of cloth.
- Carry the kept coal wherever you go, or bury it at your threshold, so the promise smoulders on unseen.
