Choose a Saturday if you can, the day of Saturn and firm boundaries, and time the working to the full moon, when protective magic reaches its height. The turning hour mirrors the spell itself: a door closing as the old day gives way.
The Working
- At midnight, light a single candle and hold the tip of a knife or splinter in its flame until it blackens with soot.
- Mix the soot with a few drops of oil in the hollow of your palm until it runs dark and slow as ink.
- On a scrap of paper — or upon the wood of the doorframe itself — begin the mark without lifting your hand.
- Draw the guarding angle: a downward stroke for the threshold, three crossings for the walls, and a closing turn to seal the shape.
- Never let the line break; if it breaks, wipe it clean and begin again with a fresh breath.
- Breathe once upon the finished mark to wake it, and name aloud the thing it is meant to keep out.
- Leave it to dry in the dark, and speak of it to no one who lives beyond your walls.

- No black candle? A plain white candle carries all-purpose protection and works just as well for a first casting.

- Guarding more than a door? Draw the same unbroken angle small on paper and tuck one into a bag, a car, or a windowsill to carry the ward with you.
