First light is a thin place — this is a divination bath spell worked at dawn, a rite in which you bathe not the body but the sight, steeping mugwort and eyebright to lift the grey film that ordinary waking lays across the inner eye. Where cards or a scrying mirror read the future outward, Wash the Veil Thin turns the seeing inward, greeting the coming day while it is still soft and its omens still legible.

- Optional: a piece of amethyst or labradorite set at the bowl’s rim
The Best Time to Cast
Cast at dawn, in the narrow window before the sun clears the horizon, when the water still remembers the dark it came from and the eye has only just left its dreaming. Choose a Monday — the Moon’s own day — and, if you can, one falling on or near the full moon, when receptivity to omen and vision runs highest. Dawn opens the veil; the lunar Monday and full moon hold it open long enough for you to see through.
The Working
- Before the sun clears the horizon, warm a bowl of water and steep a handful of eyebright and mugwort until the water goes gold and bitter-green.
- Strain the brew, then stir in three drops of clary oil, turning the water always toward the place the sun will rise.
- Wet your fingers and anoint your closed eyelids, your brow, and the hollow at the base of your skull, where sight is said to sleep.
- Speak the incantation to the water, then pour it slowly over the crown of your head and let it run down without wiping it away.
- Ring a bell once, close beside your ear, and keep your eyes shut until the sound has entirely died.
- Open your eyes to the first true light and do not speak; the first thing you see clearly is the day’s own answer to what you carry.
- Let the air dry you, keeping the anointing on your skin until the sun stands full up.
The Incantation
Eyebright, open what waking has sealed,
Wash from my seeing the world’s grey shield.
Mugwort, remember the road of the dream,
Carry it up through the morning’s first gleam.
Water that rose from the underdark deep,
Rinse the long film of the ordinary sleep.
Let the day meet me with nothing between —
Thin be the veil, and clear be the seen.
Variations & Substitutions
- No clary sage? A few drops of jasmine oil or plain moon-charged water carry the same lunar, dream-opening current.
- Sensitive skin, or no room to bathe: keep the brew as a wash for the eyelids, brow, and nape alone rather than pouring it over the crown.
- No bell? A single struck singing bowl or wind chime serves as well — you need only one clean tone to close your eyes upon.
A Word on Intent
Divination lifts the veil; it does not licence you to peer past another’s consent. Work this bath to read your own path and the omens the day offers you freely — never to pry into thoughts a person has not shared. Hold to the Wiccan Rede, an it harm none, do what ye will, and let what you glimpse guide rather than control. Sight taken gently is sight that keeps returning.
