Magical Wiccan Punch for Beltane is a moon-charged drink of red wine or dark fruit juice, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and orange. It is prepared the day before Beltane, warmed without boiling, stirred clockwise, and shared when the festival arrives.
Preparation:15 minutes, plus overnight infusion
Yield: approximately 4 cups
Beltane Punch Ingredients
- 1 bottle red wine, red grape juice, or cherry nectar
- 3 pinches ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground cardamom
- 7 whole cloves
- 2 orange slices
Preparing the Punch Before Beltane
- Pour one cup of wine or juice into a small pot.
- Add cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and orange.
- Warm gently without letting the liquid boil.
- Stir clockwise with a wooden spoon.
- Imagine romance, friendship, good company, and a joyful summer without naming a particular person.
- Wish the same good things for everyone who will share the cup.
Cinnamon quicken and seven cloves burn.
Call willing friendship and love without chain.
Bring bright companions with summer again.
Moon bless the vessel and sunrise make clear;
Joy enter freely for all gathered here.”
Charging the Beltane Punch Overnight
Cover the pot and place it near a window long enough to receive moonlight or starlight. Once cool, refrigerate it overnight. At dawn, return the covered vessel briefly to the window so sunlight completes the passage from night into day.
This keeps the original threefold charging by moon, stars, and sun while keeping the fruit drink fresh.
Finishing the Punch on Beltane
- Strain out the cloves and orange if you want a clear drink.
- Add the remaining wine, grape juice, or cherry nectar.
- Warm gently again without boiling, or serve cool if the day is hot.
- Taste and add a little honey only if the juice is sharply tart.
- Pour into cups and offer the first serving to the festival table.
Serving Variations
Use red grape juice or cherry nectar for an alcohol-free Beltane punch. Add sparkling water immediately before serving for a lighter cup. Keep the seven cloves during infusion; their number belongs to the original pattern.
Making a Larger Festival Bowl
For eight to ten cups, double every ingredient except the cloves; use eleven rather than fourteen so their bitterness does not rule the drink. Infuse the spices in two cups of liquid, strain, then combine with the remaining bottles shortly before serving.
Float fresh orange slices only at the final table. A few edible rose petals may circle the surface, but the dark red drink should remain visible beneath them.
The First and Final Cups
Pour the first cup into the shared bowl or set it before the Beltane altar for the duration of the feast. Pass the next cups clockwise. Invite each person to name one form of joy they welcome for themselves and one they wish for the wider circle.
At the end, pour any altar portion onto garden earth if its ingredients suit the soil. Refrigerate remaining punch and use it the following day. The working closes when the vessel is washed and returned to ordinary service.
Share the punch before the Beltane Union Celebration Ritual, or serve it after the Beltane Tarot Card Spread.
Choosing the Red Base
Wine creates a darker, drier punch. Red grape juice is round and familiar; cherry nectar is thicker and more tart. Taste the base before adding spice. Sweet juice may need no honey, while dry wine benefits from orange fragrance rather than added sugar.
Keep the same base through infusion and final mixing so the charged cup remains one continuous preparation.
Label the covered vessel if it shares a refrigerator with ordinary drinks.
Serve mindfully.

Mmm thanks I love punch!
